The short personal essay tends to have a tight focus, but its depth and power can be remarkable. Why do we long remember, and even cherish, certain newspaper columns or brief memoir pieces? This class will concentrate on ways we can frame our memories, and focus our opinions. Which small moments of our lives might make for great stories? What themes need to be stressed to make an essay effective? Why do some small memories haunt us, and how can we sculpt our chosen subject to bring its inherent power, succinctly, to the page? Essays will be read in class. You may bring a very brief piece, or notes for a future piece, to the first class. Limited to 12.
